How to discover new music you actually like

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

Everybody must do this right now.

Pandora - Find Music You’ll Love.

  1. Put in a few bands you like.
  2. Listen to its suggestions.
  3. Rate them up or down.
  4. Discover awesome underground Swedish indie band. Purchase EP the same night.

Your mileage may vary. Specifically, the link in #4 might point someplace else for you. But I’m sure the gist is there. (Muchas gracias & mad props to KG for the link)

Midterm Strategy

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

My strategy, loosely inspired by observing my roommate Rushi. This has worked for all my midterms so far this quarter.

  1. Go to all lectures. Take good notes. On paper, not computer. Label them with lecture number in addition to date (it’s useful)
  2. Discussion isn’t actually necessary, and rarely useful. Try not to miss the quizzes, though. (Oops)
  3. Attend any review sessions. Pay attention.
  4. Two days before the midterm, start reviewing notes.
  5. The night before the midterm, do any homework/practice tests/other preparation. If this is a math class, and homework is not actually required, this is the time to do it all.
  6. That’ll keep you up late. Don’t get up for early classes on the day of the midterm, you need sleep more.
  7. Get up an hour before the midterm. Shower, get ready.
  8. Caffeinate. 125-150mg on an empty stomach seems to work well. Take it up to 200mg for math.
  9. Roll in.
  10. Ace.
  11. Roll out.

That’s how you take a midterm, Rushi-style.
