About me

Hi!
I’m Joe Auricchio, a student at UC San Diego. I’m studying for my Masters degree in Computer Science, specializing in computer architecture, with an eye toward embedded systems and operating systems, and a few furtive glances at security. I’m working with Professors Steven Swanson and Michael Taylor on microarchitectural issues of a new processor design.
I work primarily at the hardware/software boundary: processor architecture, digital logic design, operating systems, drivers, embedded systems programming. In the past I’ve done web application programming and general sysadmin. I’m currently at ViaSat working with security-related embedded systems.
I enjoy listening to music of many kinds on high-quality headphones.
I like rock climbing. I still don’t have much of a rack: just some quickdraws and a cordelette. My next purchase will be a rope. After that I’ll learn how to place trad gear. I’m at 5.10A level; maybe 10B on a good day. I usually climb at Vertical Hold. I like Big Rock (Perris) and Joshua Tree.
I have two transportation-related hobbies: motorcycling and sailing. They are almost precise opposites, which amuses me to no end. Deafening/quiet, fast/slow, reflex/patience, exacting/approximate, demanding/sedate, solo/crewed, burning fossil fuel/clean and green, twisty curves/steady bearing, land/water. Even the wind is perfectly different: on a motorcycle, it’s always from straight ahead; on a sailboat it’s from everywhere but straight ahead.
